  4. 1. INTRODUCTION
  5. ===============

  7. Have you ever lost an application buried under another pile of Windows?
  8. If the answer to this question is yes, then Finder is the solution for you.
  9.  
  10. Finder is a program which allows you to swap between all of your active
  11. applications with tremendous ease. Finder adds a control Icon to the title
  12. bar of your currently active application, adjacent to the control menu Icon
  13. (ie near the top left hand corner of your active window). Click this Icon
  14. and you get a pull down list of your currently active applications. Simply
  15. select the one you want and it will be activated and brought to the top of
  16. the heap.

  18. Finder is so much more convenient than the standard Windows features. For
  19. example, the Switch To item of the Control Menu or double clicking the
  20. desktop to invoke Task Manager (especially when your current application
  21. is full screen).
  22.  
  23. Finder works very nicely indeed with BackMenu and some consider it an excellent
  24. replacement for BigDesk because it consumes far fewer resources.

  27. 2. INSTALLATION
  28. ===============

  30. Place the file FINDER.EXE in any convenient directory. You can invoke Finder
  31. in any one of four ways:
  32.  
  33. *    Select the Run... dialog of Program Manager, File Manager or your
  34.     favorite application launcher.
  35.  
  36. *    Select the New... dialog of Program Manager to create an application
  37.     Icon which you can double click to start Finder.
  38.  
  39. *    Add FINDER.EXE to the [Load] command of your WIN.INI file to start
  40.     Finder automatically each time you enter Windows.
  41.  
  42. *    If you are using MS Windows 3.1, add FINDER.EXE to the "StartUp Group".

  45. 3. USING FINDER
  46. ===============
  47.  
  48. Locate the Finder control Icon on your active Window Title Bar (the box with
  49. the red/blue rectangles). Point the mouse at the Finder Control Icon and DRAG
  50. it (ie hold down and keep holding down the left mouse button). A popup menu
  51. will appear. The menu will display a list of running tasks (excluding the
  52. currently selected task). Select the task or application you want and release 
  53. the left mouse button. The selected task will be activated (and, if Minimised,
  54. it will be restored to 'normal' size). Those are the basics.
  55.  
  56. Finder can also be configured to display some additional useful status
  57. information on the title bar of the active window. The amount of free memory
  58. and resources can be displayed on the left and the current time of day on the
  59. right. Finder automatically supresses these extra displays when the title bar
  60. gets too crowded.

  62. Additional Finder menu items include:
  63.  
  64. *    Backmenu. If you use BackMenu (and I highly recommend it) then Finder
  65.      will recognise that it is active and present BackMenu as a menu 
  66.     option. Selecting BackMenu will activate it (equivalent to Alt-F10).
  67.  
  68. *       The Run... option is similar to that in Program Manager. However, it
  69.         maintains a list of the ten most recently commands. These are
  70.         automatically saved to a Finder.Ini file in the Windows directory
  71.         together with the other configuration options. Selecting Browse from
  72.         the Run dialog will enable you to select a program from a normal File 
  73.         Open style window.
  74.  
  75. *    The Config... option presents a simple dialog to enable or disable
  76.         the display of time and free memory information on the title bar.
  77.         These options are also saved in the Finder.Ini file. Please remember
  78.         that, regardless of these settings, Finder only displays this
  79.         information if there is sufficient space on the title bar.
  80.  
  81. *       The Help... option invokes Help.
  82.  
  83. *    The About... option will do the usual thing.
  84.  
  85. *       The Close Current Window option will close the currently active 
  86.         application (equivalent to File Exit).
  87.  
  88. *    The Unload Finder option will unload Finder from Windows.
  89.  
  90. *       The Exit Windows to DOS option will cause Windows to shutdown and 
  91.         return to native DOS.

  95. 4. LICENCE FEES

  98. Finder is ShareWare. This means you can evaluate it for up to 30 days.
  99. After this period you must decide that it is a pile of junk and delete
  100. it from your hard disk or, that it is a useful tool in which case you
  101. should send me some cash to fund future development of the product.

  103. For a perpetual licence to use Finder on a single machine, please send
  104. a modest ten pounds (or twenty dollars) to the author at the address shown
  105. below.

  107. For a perpetual licence to use Finder on up to twenty machines, please
  108. send one hundred pounds (or two hundred dollars) to the address shown below.
